Fisher House Arkansas: $10 million needed to provide comfort for veterans' families

Fisher House Arkansas will provide a home away from home for families of veterans who are receiving care at the Little Rock VA medical center.

And with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for next month, the organization needs your help to make it happen.

The first in the state, Fisher House Arkansas will offer furnished bedrooms, kitchens, and common areas where families of veterans can stay together in comfort.

It will also provide a space for families to bond and unwind during stressful medical treatments for the veteran they love.

While this will come at no cost to the families, Debby Meece with the organization said $10 million is needed to get the house built.

"We really feel like it's a great opportunity for the citizens of Arkansas to show their gratitude and support for our military and veteran families," Meece said.

The organization is looking for both corporate and individual donations.

"I think veterans have really sacrificed for us, and their family members, so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have right now.," Meece said. "And I know there are a lot of other good causes out there, but I don't think we can serve any better than to serve our heroes."

Meece assures givers that each penny donated will stay in Arkansas.

"The Fisher House Foundation builds the Fisher House Arkansas and then we'll turn it over to the Little Rock VA to operate it," Meece said. "So, the $10 million is for the total construction of the Fisher House Arkansas on the Little Rock campus of Central Arkansas Veterans' Healthcare System."

Knowing the struggles military families face, Meece believes Arkansans can really help make a difference.

"Serving veterans and allowing their families to stay in a wonderful environment is the best money I think we can spend," she said.

Fisher House Arkansas will break ground on June 14th.
